Wireless charging standards, How Technology Works

This is something unimaginable to hear about wireless charging and people are really anxious to know about it. Presently there are three big companies in the competition for this technology and they have their own trade secrets and each is trying to win the competition.

Let us see who they are and what they have? Three giants in the field are: Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP), Power Matters Alliance (PMA), and the Wireless Power Consortium (Qi).

The Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) transfer technology is known by the name “Rezence” built on magnetic resonance, the opposite of “magnetic induction charging” and claims to be the “next generation” of wireless charging technology. The magnetic resonance can do multiple-device charging, through layers, materials like books, clothing and distances of a few feet, and can charge in the presence of other metallic objects in “real world” situations like kitchen appliances etc.

A4WP is yet not accepted despite cooperation of roughly 100 companies like Qualcomm, MediaTek, Intel, LG, HTC, Samsung, a few from the list. It is highly unlikely any smartphone with wireless charging will use this specification. Because of this A4WP has merged its charging specification with Power Matters Alliance.

Power Matters Alliance resolved to introduce their technology to all 8,000 or so stores in the United States in about 18 months. PMA is a little bigger than A4WP in membership because of consumer oriented solutions. Two devices in the US market natively support PMA wireless charging, the Kyocera Hydro VIBE and the Hydro Icon.

Qi. Has the cooperation of 200 industry members, including Verizon, Nokia, and LG

Qi and PMA both use inductive charging, but with different wavelength: Qi’s is 100-205kHz and PMA’s is 277-357kHz and the method is the same.

It is certainly surprising to pass the energy from one source to device without any media. May be the technology goes beyond smartphones and we see our world cable free.
