Technology is noting but thought process of human mind. Take the example of battery, there were days when a smartphone battery were charged in hours and than the charging time was reduced considerably but it never came to minutes. Now we have the technology that really shocks us and it is unimaginable to charge the battery in just one minute. This is the brain child of Stanford University researchers who have reached this wonderful invention.
The resultant product is a cheap and safe “high-performance” aluminum battery with longer life and not very costly, rather costs less than the conventional lithium-ion batteries that have in the past caused accident by exploding under certain circumstances. This new invention is much safer and from such accident with as said above for more efficient in life and performance with far less charging time; just a minute. Even drilling a hole through it will not cause fire.
Stanford University Professor Hongjie Dai has the credit of this wonder. The battery consists of two electrodes; one is positively charged cathode, the other negatively charged anode made of aluminum. This cell combines an aluminum anode and graphite cathode, with an ionic liquid electrolyte, inside a flexible polymer-coated pouch.
It was found during the test that the aluminum-ion cells could handle 7500 recharge cycles and not losing any power capacity. Against this fantastic capacity is for grater than the 100 life cycles of aluminum batteries in previous tests. Lithium-ion batteries typically last for 1000 recharge cycles. One minute charging time gives tremendous help to power users in getting extended usage out of their mobile devices.
The new aluminum batteries can bend and fold that will provide possibility of designing flexible phones. Aluminum is cheaper than lithium therefore the cost of the battery is also less. However presently lithium batteries have upper edge in terms of voltage but the inventor Dai is sure to resolve this issue by improving the cathode material, voltage should increase.
At this stage the newly invented battery produces about half the voltage of a typical lithium battery. By improving the cathode material could eventually increase the voltage and energy density; otherwise, the new product is just perfect as an ideal battery like less expensive electrodes, good safety, high-speed charging, flexibility and long cycle life. It is an exciting invention.
