Apple and Android are developing larger size handsets

It seems the smaller smartphones will be soon out of market. Apple launched iPhone6 and gave it 4.7 inches display and at its own time it was fair enough. Now these very sets, 5c and 5s are available at lower price because of the new generation of bigger smartphones. Presently it is time for 6 and 6 plus and maybe by next year these iOS single handed operated devices will also be pushed down in price and usage.

Initially Apple introduced 3.5 inches display handsets and they were quite popular and easy to use with one hand. You can say they were practical handsets. Now Apple does not think of going back and make devices less than 4.7 inches screen. Presently this is the standard with them.

We can see this upward trend in case of Android world. Now Google is bringing Nexus 6 in the market which is 5.9 inches screen and is larger than the previous versions. Nexus 5 had 5 inches screen and it replaced even the previous version Nexus 4 with 4.7 inches screen. Going back about 4 years we can see Nexus S with even smaller screen. Now travelling forward from 2010 to 2015 we see a trend of larger and larger display in the upcoming devices. It seems the smaller version of 3.5 inches or less will become story of the past and antique.

The major manufactures of smartphones who manufacture and sell the high end devices have abandoned making the practical and small size handsets and moving forward to larger size. Apple has also joined the race of larger size devices. Now there is no chance that we shall see those old time small size sets. There was a time when in 2010 people were quite happy with 3.2 inches screen having a battery of 1 day capacity and thought their needs are fulfilled.

Now we find in the market the larger size devices. Is it the consumers demand or the companies are pushing these large size devices to the consumers. It seems companies are trying to standout in size competition and consumers are left with not much of choice so the companies are flooding the market with phablets and tablets with larger display.

It is a strange phenomena that a desire to have smaller handsets is being satisfied by smartwatches which is another extreme end towards miniaturization. If the manufacturers think that the desire for smaller handsets can be compensated by smartwatches, they are wrong. Smartwatches are not for everybody and probably the common user will never prefer them over the small size handsets. He would still like a handset which his pocket can accommodate and his hand feels comfortable manipulating it single handed. The smartwatches shall not be a solution to the desire of small size smartphone.

The trend of compact and mini handset also took rise to moderate the saturation between the small handsets and the large size phablets and tablets. Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and Sony Z3 compact I did serve the goal to some extent but they also possess the screen size of 4.5 inches to 4.7 inches. You can call them smaller when you are talking in terms of phablets. To put these mini or compact handsets in your pocket you need sufficient space and stretching your thumb over the screen, though possible, is not very convenient.

The current trend of large size screens is moving in opposite direction of smaller handsets and they are not likely to give place to the old style small devices. Even the companies don’t find it beneficial to produce smaller handsets while the bigger once are doing a better business for them.
