ISOCELL Technology: Get High Resolution Imaging in the Slimmest Devices

As smartphones get thinner, the elements within the device also need to scale down. ISOCELL Technology is a technology that offers high resolution in slimmest cells. The latest chip by Samsung the 1.0μm-pixel-based 16 megapixel (MP) CMOS image sensor did the same. Samsung chip carries high resolution imaging to one of the slimmest smartphones in the market.


Image sensor holds various types of pixels, it also collects light particles that called photons. Image sensor quality gives high performance and the light accurately captures pictures, and then it converts into electrical signals. Consequently, larger size pixels that allow better picture quality. Thinner mobiles have less space for inner components, so pixels get smaller too. It makes the amalgamation of photons much more complex. To carry on to achieve high-resolution imaging, the solution therefore has been to maximize the photon absorption of each pixel.

Due to the scaling when it comes to limitations, this technique still facades various challenges. The pixels’ sensitivity to light could lessen whilst wobbly photons generates crosstalk that become reason of noise.

Korean giant Samsung initiated ISOCELL technology in 2014. The technology reduces crosstalk of photons between pixels by 30% and has a 20% wider chief ray angle. Thus, it allows more pixels to collect more light so as to capture colors more accurately.

The 1.0μm-pixel-based image antenna measures only about 5mm high. The measurement could be roughly 20% thinner than the preceding 1.12μm model. It offers comparable image quality as well. Device makers now have more flexibility in prototyping products that are smooth and trendy and competent of taking high resolution. So, latest devices are able to share-worthy photos.
